Nar Phu Valley trek is one of Nepal’s best-kept secrets. Combined with the Annapurna Circuit and iconic Tilicho Lake, this 15-day journey is truly extraordinary. You will explore remote Himalayan villages, cross high passes, and reach the world’s highest lake. Very few trekkers ever experience all three regions in a single trip.
The Nar Phu Valley sits behind a restricted zone in the Annapurna Conservation Area. Therefore, it remains unspoiled and deeply traditional. Ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture thrives here. The landscape shifts dramatically from lush green forests to barren alpine terrain.
Furthermore, Tilicho Lake at 4,919 meters is a breathtaking reward. The sheer blue expanse against towering peaks is unforgettable. Additionally, crossing Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters is one of the most iconic moments on the entire Annapurna Circuit trek. This combined route offers an extraordinary range of scenery, culture, and challenge.

Nar Phu Valley is a hidden gem nestled in the Manang District of Nepal. It requires a special restricted area permit to enter. As a result, it remains one of the least-visited trekking destinations in the Himalayas. That is exactly what makes it so special.
The valley feels like stepping back in time. Consequently, you will encounter authentic villages where Tibetan Buddhist traditions have survived unchanged for centuries. Elderly villagers still wear traditional clothing. Prayer flags flutter above ancient stone monasteries. The entire atmosphere is peaceful and profoundly spiritual.
Moreover, the Nar Phu trekking route passes through a dramatic gorge carved by the Phu Khola river. The towering canyon walls rise hundreds of metres on either side. In particular, the approach to Phu village — perched on a rocky hilltop at 4,080 metres — is one of the most striking sights on the entire trek.
Both Nar village and Phu village offer simple but welcoming teahouse accommodation. Local families run these guesthouses with great warmth. You will eat home-cooked Nepali and Tibetan food and sleep under incredibly clear mountain skies.
| Restricted Area Note: A separate Nar Phu Restricted Area Permit is required. Pathfinder Treks handles all permits on your behalf. |
Tilicho Lake sits at an elevation of 4,919 metres above sea level. It is considered one of the highest lakes in the world. The Guinness World Records once listed it as the highest lake globally. Even today, reaching it feels like a genuine high-altitude achievement.
The trail to Tilicho Lake branches off from the main Annapurna Circuit trekking route near Manang. The side trip adds an extra night and a challenging high-altitude day. Nevertheless, every single trekker agrees it is absolutely worth the effort.
The lake itself is surrounded by snow-covered peaks on three sides. In the early morning, the water reflects the mountains perfectly. Furthermore, the approach trail crosses a steep and exposed mountain slope. A fixed rope section helps trekkers navigate safely. However, strong legs and good acclimatisation are essential before attempting this section.
Additionally, the area around Tilicho Base Camp offers panoramic views of Tilicho Peak (7,134 m), the Mesokanto La pass, and the wider Annapurna massif. In other words, you are surrounded by extraordinary Himalayan scenery at every turn.
No Annapurna Circuit trek is complete without crossing Thorong La Pass. Standing at 5,416 metres, this high mountain pass is the highest point of the entire circuit. Crossing it is physically demanding but deeply rewarding.
The crossing day typically begins before dawn. Trekkers set off in darkness with headlamps from Thorong Phedi or High Camp. The ascent is steep and relentless. However, the views from the top are absolutely spectacular. You can see peaks in all directions, including Annapurna, Yakawa Kang, and Khatung Kang.
The descent to Muktinath is long but exhilarating. Muktinath is a sacred Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage site. The famous Muktinath Temple attracts both pilgrims and trekkers from around the world. After crossing the pass, reaching Muktinath feels like a triumphant arrival.

This is a challenging high-altitude trek. It is designed for trekkers with prior experience at altitude. You do not need to be a professional mountaineer. However, good physical fitness is essential before you begin.
The daily walking hours range from 5 to 8 hours. Trail conditions vary significantly — from well-maintained teahouse paths to rough, steep, and exposed mountain terrain. The Nar Phu Valley section in particular involves narrow canyon trails with some exposed sections.
Furthermore, both Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass require trekkers to be well acclimatised before attempting them. The itinerary includes built-in acclimatisation days in Manang. Therefore, following the schedule carefully is crucial for your safety and enjoyment.
We strongly recommend training 2 to 3 months before the trek. Focus on cardiovascular fitness, leg strength, and carrying a loaded backpack. As a result, you will enjoy the experience far more and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
| Season | Trekking Conditions |
| March – May (Spring) | Excellent – rhododendron forests bloom brilliantly. Clear skies and mild temperatures. Best for photography and mountain views. |
| June – August (Monsoon) | Not recommended – heavy rainfall, leeches on trails, poor visibility, and landslide risk. |
| September – November (Autumn) | Best season – crystal-clear skies, stable weather, great mountain visibility. Peak trekking season. |
| December – February (Winter) | Possible but very cold. Thorong La Pass may be closed due to heavy snowfall. Not ideal for beginners. |
At Pathfinder Treks, your safety is our highest priority. Therefore, we have designed this itinerary with careful acclimatization built in throughout. We follow the golden rule of trekking at altitude: “Trek high, sleep low.”
The itinerary includes a full rest and acclimation day in Manang (3,519 m). This gives your body time to adjust before the challenging sections to Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass. In addition, the gradual altitude gain through the Nar Phu Valley helps your body prepare naturally.
Our guides are trained to recognize the early signs of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). They carry basic medications including Diamox. If any serious symptoms appear, immediate descent is the protocol no exceptions. We always priorities your health over the itinerary.
| 🩺 Medical Advice: Consult your doctor about Diamox (acetazolamide) before departure. Stay well hydrated throughout the trek and never rush the acclimation process. |
Accommodation throughout this trek is in local teahouses and mountain lodges. Standards vary depending on the location. In lower-altitude towns like Chame and Manang, teahouses are well-developed with comfortable rooms and attached bathrooms. However, in remote areas like Phu and Nar villages, facilities are basic but clean.
All meals are included during the trek on a full-board basis. You will enjoy a wide variety of food, including dal bhat (the traditional Nepali rice and lentil meal), pasta, noodles, soups, porridge, pancakes, and Tibetan bread. Hot drinks tea, coffee, and hot lemon are available at every tea house.
Please note that extra drinks, chocolate bars, and personal snacks are not included in the package cost. Moreover, WiFi and hot showers are usually available at extra cost in most tea houses.
At Pathfinder Treks, our experienced trekking guides are the foundation of every successful trek. All our guides are Nepal Tourism Board licensed. They speak fluent English and have years of experience on high-altitude Himalayan routes.
Your guide does far more than navigate the trail. They share cultural knowledge, monitor your health throughout the trek, liaise with tea house owners, and ensure your overall safety every single day. In essence, they are your mountain companion, cultural interpreter, and safety manager all at once.
Furthermore, our porters carry your main luggage up to 20 kg per porter load so you can trek comfortably with just your day pack. We strictly follow fair porter treatment guidelines. Our porters receive proper equipment, fair wages, and appropriate accommodation. Responsible trekking matters to us deeply.
We believe that great adventures should leave a positive impact on the places and people we visit. Consequently, Pathfinder Treks is committed to sustainable and responsible trekking practices throughout our operations.
